Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adult Basic Education (ABE) is a program that will help you build your basic academic skills in Reading Comprehension, Writing and Mathematics to prepare for enrollment in HiSET Preparation classes or the High School Diploma (HSD) program.  To qualify for the High School diploma program or the High School Equivalency Certificate at Long Beach School for Adults, you are required to pass the Reading Comprehension assessment at a 9th grade level. If you do not score at a 9th grade reading level you will be placed in the Adult Basic Education program, in order to build your skills.  Once you reach a 9th grade reading level you will transition to the program of your choice.

ABE Class meets Monday – Thursday and consistent attendance is very important. You are encouraged to study at least 2 hour or more  a day outside of class time to gain the academic skills needed to improve. ABE students will work daily on reading comprehension, vocabulary building, writing, and math skills.

ABE Class Times:

ABE Level 1: (2.0 - 5.9) - 8:30 am - 9:45 am  and 10 - 11:15 am    Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (15 students per class)
